I am a 24 year old student at USC (South Carolina) where I am returning after getting my first degree to pursue a career in nursing. I have always been active in my life, but have recently found a true passion for competing in sports.
I was never an athlete growing up, but I do not feel that has hindered me (except possibly not having as good a fitness base, perhaps setting me back a year) and perhaps since I do not “expect” to win, as some youth athletes do, it may even help my long term success. I became interested in Triathlon about a year after I attempted to through-hike that Appalachian Trail in 2005. I was at home with nothing to expend my energy on for the first time in three months, and decided to take up mountain biking. From there I became interested in Adventure Racing and began running. After trying to put together a racing team and a brief yet unrewarding stint with a semi-established team, I decided that Triathlon presented an opportunity to compete without having to rely upon the whims of others.
My first race was a 10k run, and from there I was hooked. I love to race, it gives my training motivation, and throughout life I have always trained with the mantra of “This is where the race is won”.

Hey man I love the website. sounds like your training is going real well. keep it up, but pay close attention to your chins for bad splints. that can become hairline fractures if your not careful. believe me I know. hang in there and stay focused. its all in the mind bro. also let me know about the panthers game on the 8th of october. i still have four tickets for you, dad, brandon, and me. take care and love you.

Definitely will watch the shins bro. Really interesting thing about that, I run better when I bike first; it keeps the shins from hurting. They actually feel better on my long days because the biking breaks up the running! I have not figured out yet if it is totally a warm-up thing or if the bike may be stretching some muscle (tibialis in the front of the shin?) that I neglect otherwise. I am definitely a go for the game, and am looking forward to it! Lots of folks think we could go to the superbowl this year!

I googled SC IM because I am participating and found your site. Sounds like you have trained really hard. There are not many people our age who do tri’s so it is great to see other young 20 somethings out there. Good Luck next Sunday!!! I am at Winthrop in SC getting my masters in Nutrition. I’m glad I have two of my most challenging exams during taper week. This way I am forced to taper down!!!

I never thought about taking it as a “forced taper”, that is really a bright way to look at it Christin! I just read your comment after making a post about viewing race-week exams as stressful, now I have a new way to look at them! I do agree about the 20-somethings not being well represented in triathlon, and have many ideas on why that could be. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday! I will be competing in the novice group, as I am still not under six hours! My goal is to break six hours! Good luck!
