Another (rest) week in the books!

April 9, 2007

Method number 117 for determining if your training is going well – you look forward to rest weeks, particularly the end of the rest week so you can start training again!

So, I have not posted for a while, but my training has gone somewhat like this:

First week after the race I was doing okay, but my tuesday and thursday runs were a bit uncomfortable.  I had developed a pain in my right hip area (more specifically, piriformis) during the Parris Island Triathlon.  I thought it was just one of those nagging things that would go away, that I had been sleeping wrong or something.  Well, Saturday it stopped me cold.  I was doing a transition run off the bike and planned on getting a quick six in, but I only made it five miles, and I did that because the pain started 2.5 miles in and I had to get back somehow.  Figured that I had two days of rest (sunday is off, monday is only swimming with my schedule now) and that would help things along.  Started out easy on tuesday, but by three miles in I was reduced to walking intermittently to get the pain to go away.

I always approach an injury in a logical manner, and here is my logic with this one.  First, weight bearing is fine, additional weight (such as squating) does not hurt.  This eliminates most things to do with bone and ligament/tendon issues.  Cycling does not hurt at all.  So it is a muscle strain, something soft tissue, used only when I run.  Who works on soft tissue problems?

So I have been twice now to get a sports massage with focus on that hip.  It really has made me realize how much I need to stretch, as I feel very powerful after everything has been limbered up good.  It has been nearly two full weeks since I have run last, and I plan on starting back this tuesday.  I am just going to run on the track so that I won’t be miles away from home if it does start acting up again, lol.  I have no expectations about pace, just to feel loose and get my running form back.  Fingers crossed!

On lighter, non-training related notes, everybody should start seeing a new old face around the web site.  Gabe has found a way to reach through from the great beyond and made her first stop over at my neck of the web!  I feel honored, she has been secluded behind China’s governmental firewall as she volunteers to teach english over there, and as soon as she could poke her head out she got word to me!  Awww, ain’t that sweet!  There is a link to her blog on my list to the right, under Mysterious and Misplaced Logic, where she has been keeping a great journal about her time over there.  It is definitely worth checking out for the beautiful pictures, and Gabe’s writing is excellent and quite varied (unlike my theme and variation here, where it is mostly an outlet so I don’t bore everybody around me with constant chatter about triathlon!)

Also, another friend of mine is getting married and I will be going to a pre-wedding party this coming weekend!  When do I start feeling like I am behind the 8-ball on this whole relationship/marriage thing?  I think I have a few more years, at least, before that would be well-founded!

Okay, it is late, I have class tomorrow, unfortunately, so I am off!
